September is an exciting month! We’ve got lots of exhibition programming coming up and alhumdulilah, I’m even published in a new book about Malcom X! Starting with tomorrow’s online verbal description tour of my Close to Home exhibition, the Mapping Malcolm X book launch event at CARA on September 13th, and ending with the final gathering for my To Know One Another social practice project at the Queens Museum – there’s so much to look forward to and celebrate with you, inshaAllah!
First things first..
Join me online tomorrow Sunday, September 8th, from 12 to 2pm EST for a verbal description tour of my Close to Home exhibition. I’ll be doing a deep dive into one of my new Fitra oil paintings for this special ArtAccess event. Though this event is targeted to the needs of people who are blind and low vision, all are welcome to attend regardless of ability. I do want to ask a favor however. Can you please take a moment to consider people in your community who are blind or have low vision and share this event with them? The RSVP link can be found here.
Come out next week for our book launch!
I’m happy to share with you that the launch event for the Mapping Malcolm at CARA will be on September 13th, at 7pm. I’ll be in conversation with the editor Najha Zigbi-Johnson and fellow contributors to the Mapping Malcolm book. CARA is located at 225 West 13th Street New York, NY 10011.
Published by Columbia Books on Architecture and The City, Mapping Malcolm continues the project of reinscribing Malcolm X’s memory and legacy in the present by exploring his commitment to community building and his articulation of a global power analysis as it continues to manifest across New York City today. More specifically, the book explores the limits and possibilities of the archive, the political, material, and philosophical legacy of the Black radical tradition, the Black diaspora, and the state. You can RSVP and learn about the book here.
Mark Your Calendar!
To Know One Another will be back for 3 gatherings in September on the 13th, 20th, and 28th. Those are all the dates we have left so if you’ve been meaning to join us but haven’t been able to yet, so make sure you mark your calendar in advance! On September 28th we’ll be joined by Chloe Bass, co-director of Social Practice Queens.
Alongside To Know One Another, September will also include a second iteration of On Place and Process: In Situ Artist Fellows in the Studio with myself, Cameron A. Granger, and Catalina Schliebener Muñoz. You can RSVP here. On September 22nd, we will be discussing our fellowship, artistic process, and the work we did at the museum that culminated in our ongoing exhibitions.
I look forward in-person or online this month!
