The Architecture of Devotion: Eid al-Adha and the Spaces We Build

As the sacred days of Dhul Hijjah unfold, leading us toward the joyous celebration of Eid al-Adha, my mind is on the geometry of return. This is a season of profound ritual—of circling, of sacrifice, and of community. It is a time when we gather with loved ones, share blessings, and renew our intentions for the year ahead.

To everyone celebrating around the world, Eid Mubarak! May your days be filled with peace, and may your homes be spaces of true sanctuary.

Ritual as a Visual Language

Nsenga Knight, Tawaf/ Sa’y: Mankind, 2018, Oilstick, Olive Oil and Gesso on Vegetable Parchment Paper, 22.5 x 22.5 inches

In my studio practice, I often explore the tension between the “hard” structural containers of our rituals and the “soft” sincerity of the heart. The works in my Tawaf/Sa’y series, for example, are meditations on movement—translating the sacred circumambulation of the Hajj into a visual language of rhythm and repetition.

There is a profound saying: “Allah is Beautiful, and He loves beauty.” But in our tradition, beauty is not merely decorative; it is a bridge to the spiritual. From the rhythmic flow of archival history to the strict geometry that mirrors the order of the cosmos, my work is created to organize the chaos of the world and bring a sense of clarity and tranquility (sakinah) into our daily lives.

Our homes are our sanctuaries. The visual stories we choose to live with help construct the energy of those spaces, serving as daily anchors to our faith, our history, and our grace.
