Journeys of Resilience and Faith: The Tawaf/Sa’y Series by Nsenga Knight

A Soulful Quest Through Art

Today, I extend an invitation for you to journey with me through the soulful intersection of art, history, and personal discovery within my Tawaf/Sa’y series. As a narrative sculpted from the essence of resilience, faith, and the undying spirit of womanhood, this series transcends mere visuals to become a testament to survival and spiritual quest.

A Reflection of Strength and Determination

As a black artist and a mother, my own life narrative mirrors the saga of Al Sayida Hajjar—her relentless pursuit in the desert, a quest for life-giving water to sustain her infant child, leading to the divine revelation of the Zam Zam well. My path too, fraught with challenges, particularly after enduring two traumatizing C-sections, found solace and strength in the natural birth of my child. This series, thus, becomes a dialogue between my soul and that of Hajar, converging through the medium of paint.

Nsenga Knight, Tawaf/ Sa’y: Butterfly and Eagle, 22.5 x 22.5″, Oilstick, Olive Oil and Gesso on Vegetable Parchment Paper.

For “Tawaf/ Sa’y: Butterfly and Eagle” I use oil stick and gesso on vegetable parchment paper to create a unique texture and depth, adding an extra dimension to the visual experience. The circular and linear forms painted with black and white text further enhance the composition, inviting the observer to contemplate the interconnectedness of the natural world. The square shape of the parchment paper provides a fascinating contrast to the organic themes depicted within the artwork. With dimensions of 22.5 x 22.5 inches, the piece draws the viewer into its intricate details. I hope this particular work in the series leaves a lasting impression that prompts contemplation about the delicate balance between the serene elegance of butterflies and the powerful grace of eagles.

Inspirations Lay in Sacred Journeys

The Tawaf/Sa’y series, with works such as “Butterfly and Eagle,”, is an exploration of the intersection of spirituality, activism, and art. Inspired by iconic figures such as Malcolm X, Ali Shariati, and Hajar, these artworks delve into the rich tapestry of the human experience. By appropriating text from Ali Shariati’s reflective memoir on the rituals of Hajj, the series gives a homage to Hajar, shedding light on her enduring significance.

The Tawaf/ Sa’y series delves into the nuanced layering of Shariati’s reflections and symbolic pilgrimage patterns, exploring the intricate weave of ritual, form, and the ceaseless pursuit of justice and material needs. Each piece in the series serves as a visual dialogue, inviting viewers to contemplate the profound resonance of these themes in contemporary society. The fusion of spiritual motifs and activist narratives yields a compelling visual narrative which I hope encourages reflection on the timeless quest for equity and spiritual fulfillment.

A Gift of Spirit, History, and Art

As Ramadan comes to an end and Eid approaches, I propose a different kind of gift. Beyond the aesthetic, a piece from the Tawaf/Sa’y series embodies spiritual, Islamic, and historical depths. These narratives, emanate from both my own experience and my reflections as a black artist and a mother. They are not only inspired by the Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj but stand as tributes to the collective strength of women, believers, and survivors.
