Sayyida Nafisa’s Khalwa: A Conversation on Muslim Women and Sacred Spaces

On May 17th, 2022 8pm Cairo time, I had a conversation with my sister Nuriddeen Knight about our visit to Sayida Nafisa’s khalwa (place of voluntary seclusion) in Cairo, Egypt. This space reminds me of the importance of my studio space where I take time alone to check in, connect more deeply with the Creator and make space for inspiration. This conversation is part of my (Social) Projects series.

Sayida Nafisa RA (762-824 AD) was a female descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), and a scholar and teacher of Islam. Among her most well known students was Imam Muhammad ibn Idris ash-Shafi’i. She is among the best known scholars in Egypt.
